Garden Tour Saturday, August 21st-- Rain or Shine

Please mark your calendars for the Portland Dahlia Society’s annual garden tour and brown bag/ pot luck picnic. We
hope to have a nice summer day, but the tour by tradition proceeds regardless of the weather.  The tour will begin
Sunday morning at
Mike and Scott’s Garden at about 10:00 AM.  Their address is 821 NE 168th Place.  Take I-205 to
the Glisan Exit (Exit 21A from either North or South bound), go East on Glisan to 165th Avenue, turn left on 165th
(North),  go past Pacific Terrace next turn right on Pacific Drive and lastly right on 168th Place. It’s the yellow house at
the top of the hill.

Next stop is Potluck lunch at
Larry Smith’s home at approximately 11:30 AM.  Go down to the end of the cul-de-sac
and turn left onto Pacific Drive, next turn left on NE 165th Avenue.  Take 165th to NE Glisan and turn right onto Glisan.
Take Glisan West about 3.5 miles to the I-205 interchange.  Take I-205 South toward Salem.  After about 1.8 miles take
exit 19 to Powell Blvd.  Be sure to bare right at the Y to get to Powell.  Turn right at the end of the exit traveling West on
Powell to SE 76th Avenue.  Turn left on 76th to Larry’s home at 4227 SE 76th Avenue.

Members are asked to bring their own utensils, plates and serving spoons.  Larry indicates he has tables, but is short on
chairs, so if you have an extra folding chair, please bring it along. Larry has a relatively small city growing space, yet
managed to win Open Sweepstakes at our show last season.  He also raises a number of vegetables, which he also
grows for competition as well as eating enjoyment.

Following lunch we will be heading to
Ted and Margaret Kennedy’s garden, arriving at approximately 1:15 PM. The
Kennedy’s address is 18283 S. Holly Lane; Oregon City, OR  97045.  From Larry’s home, retrace your path to Powell
Blvd.  Turn right, traveling East on Powell to I-205. Turn right onto I-205 Southbound for 8.9 miles.   Take exit 10 (OR
213) toward Oregon City/Molalla.  Keep right at the fork to go on OR-213/ Cascade Hwy S.  Turn right onto Redland
Road, then right onto Holly Lane.  You will see the Kennedy’s dahlias on your right.  Ted and Margaret have an amazing
colorful display of named varieties as well as seedlings. Most of the insect control is organic in this garden.  You may be
surprised by the results and want to try a similar approach yourself.  They have also perfected the art of growing
tomatoes, juicy sweet watermelon (in Western Oregon!), beans and Asian pears.

Our final stop is the home of
Bob and Cynthia Patterson at 22910 Cadonau Road, Estacada.

Begin by going the opposite direction you came in on Holly Lane, traveling southeast to Maple Lane Road (about a half
mile), turning left onto Maple Lane Road which becomes S. Maple Lane Road.  Go about two miles on Maple lane and
next turn left onto S Ferguson Road.  Go .2 of a mile and turn right onto S. Redland Road for about 8.4miles.  Turn left
at the Y to stay on Redland Road for an additional .5 mile.  Next turn right onto S. Springwater Road going about two
miles.  Next turn left onto S. Hayden Road and go 1.2 miles. Now turn left onto S. OR-211 Woodburn-Estacada Highway
for about only .8 of a mile.  Take a slight right onto S. Cadonau Road for about .7 mile to the Patterson’s address.

Please be aware that the farther the tour progresses, the more inaccurate estimated arrival times may be. It would be
great to carpool to save expense and the environment as well as provide each driver with a navigator. Our goal is for all
participants to enjoy the tour and have a safe and pleasant experience. If for any reason members join the tour late or
are not able to visit all the gardens, this is acceptable and understandable.
